Hardwood vs luxury vinyl plank — when each actually wins

We sell hardwood — here's the honest version anyway

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is waterproof, cheaper up front, and convincing from across the room. We're a hardwood distributor, but pretending vinyl has no place would cost you trust. So here's where each one actually wins.

Where LVP wins

  • Basements and below-grade — concrete slab, moisture risk. Real wood is a gamble here; LVP isn't.
  • Rentals and flips — lower up-front cost, scratch-resistant, fast install.
  • Full bathrooms — standing water. Engineered hardwood tolerates a kitchen; a bathroom is LVP territory.
  • Where hardwood wins

  • Resale value — real hardwood still appraises and sells better in Chicago's single-family and condo market. LVP reads as a builder-grade choice.
  • Lifespan — a quality engineered floor with a 4mm wear layer refinishes 2–3 times and lasts 30+ years. LVP wears through and gets replaced, not refinished.
  • Feel and acoustics — wood is warmer underfoot and quieter than a hollow vinyl click floor.
  • Repairability — a damaged hardwood board sands or swaps. Scratched LVP usually means a plank replacement that no longer matches.
  • The honest by-room call

    Bottom line

If it's your long-term home and the room stays dry, hardwood is the better 20-year decision. If it's below grade, a rental, or a wet room, LVP earns its place. We'd rather tell you that than sell you the wrong floor.
